The European Union has finalized new sustainability regulations that will affect tea imports from all producing countries. Starting January 2027, all tea entering the EU market must be accompanied by verified traceability documentation and certification that production did not contribute to deforestation.
Rwanda is well-positioned to comply, as the country's tea estates are largely situated on established plantations with clear land-use records. The RTA has been working with Rainforest Alliance and UTZ to ensure member factories meet the new standards ahead of the deadline.
This regulation is expected to benefit Rwandan tea competitiveness, as producers who already invest in sustainability will face lower compliance costs compared to competitors from less regulated markets.
